There is so much to say about Jamie and Claire (and Frank) that I shall save
this for the last. I will probably give them their own pages. This and the other
book pages are meant to clarify who was who, where they were, and what they were
doing.
Other characters are listed in order of appearance.
Mrs. Baird - proprietor of an Inverness Bed & Breakfast
where Claire and Frank have a second honeymoon following WWII, a bit nosy 1743 - Following Claire's Passage Through the Stones
Rev. Dr. Reginald Wakefield - vicar of the parish, amateur
historian and geneologist, consultant to Frank, stepfather to Roger
Quentin Lambert Beauchamp - Claire's "Uncle Lamb" who
was an archeologist and raised her following the deaths of Claire's parents in a
car accident
Mr.Crook - an elderly man who gives Claire plant presses and
first shows her Craigh Na Dun
Mr. Bainbridge - a solicitor with an interest in local history,
Claire drops a teapot in his lap by accident
The GHOST of Outlander - Jamie's ghost who has an encounter
with Frank just days before Claire goes through the stones
Mrs. Graham - Rev. Wakefield's housekeeper, who is also a Druid
and reads Claire's tea leaves
Miss Grant - a shopkeeper whom Farnk and Claire are surprised
to see participating in the Druid ceremony on Craigh Na Dun
later mentioned by Claire
Mrs. Buchanon - postmistress of Inverness
Captain Manson - supply officer that Claire knew in WWII field
hospital
Jonathan Wolverton Randall - otherwise known as "Black
Jack" - English Army Captain, "...and a bloody, filthy, nasty pervert
he was!", born Sept. 3, 1705, Claire knows that he will die April 16, 1746
at Culloden, one of Frank's ancestors Castle Leoch
Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser - loyal member of
Clan MacKenzie/Fraser, has sworn to protect Jamie since he was a baby
Dougal MacKenzie - Colum's younger brother, a Jacobite, real
father of Hamish, took Jamie on as a foster son for a year as a teen, has four
daughters
Rupert MacKenzie - loyal member of Clan MacKenzie, Jamie's
second cousin, Claire has to choose between marrying Rupert and Jamie
Jamie MacTavish - Jamie's assumed name when he first meets
Claire (as he is an outlaw)
Colum ban Campbell MacKenzie - Laird of Leoch, leader of
Clan MacKenzie, suffers from what would later be known as Toulouse-Lautrec

Laoghaire's punishment), helps Colum with pain by giving him massage
Davie Beaton - (dead) healer of Leoch, not a particularly good
one
John - Colum's attendant at Leoch
Brian Fraser - late father of Jamie, Jenny, and Willie, wife of
Ellen MacKenzie, "Black Brian", bastard son of Lord Lovat and a
serving girl
Hamish MacKenzie - son of Colum, although sired by Dougal
Gwyllyn - Welsh bard, entertainer/singer of Castle Leoch
Magdalen - a young woman at the Castle
Jacob MacKenzie - "old Jacob", previous laird, father
of Colum, Dougal, Janet, Jocasta, and Ellen
Geillis Duncan - the wife of the procurator fiscal, like
Claire, a time-traveler, thought to be a witch, has knowledge of herbs and
plants
Arthur Duncan - the procurator fiscal of the village of
Cranesmuir
Father Bain - priest of Cranesmuir
John MacRae - a locksman who tells Claire more about Geillis
when she treats him, also the town executioner
The tanner's lad - boy whose ear is nailed to the pillory as
punishment
John Campbell - Jamie makes reference to him - he attacked the
MacDonald clan fifty years earlier at an unguarded Gathering - the Glencoe
Massacre
Willie - a MacKenzie clansman
Mungo Grant - a kitchen servant
Geordie - man who is severely wounded by the boar during the
hunt, Dougal helps him die quickly
