Spring, Inverness May 2
Dr. Claire Randall brings her daughter Brianna to Inverness to research what
happened to Jamie's men at Culloden so she can tell the story to her daughter.
She is assuming that Jamie died in the battle. She just wants the rest of the
story for closure and for Bree.
Claire enlists the help of historian Roger Wakefield, the nephew of the late
Reverend (whose records from the time of the Jacobites still remain).
Roger and Bree hit it off well. They go together to Culloden House. Claire
cannot bear to join them, but will not give the real reason to them. She just
says she does not feel well.
Claire also wants to find the woman she knew in 1743
as Geillis Duncan - before she goes through the stones.
As Roger researches Claire's list of men from Broch Tuarach, he wonders why
Jamie Fraser, their captain, was not listed. He discovers that the Lallybroch
men did not die at Culloden and puts together a list of what did happen to them
for Claire. He asks her why Jamie Fraser was not on the list and she simply asks
him not to mention Jamie to Bree. This baffles Roger.
Meanwhile, Fiona Graham tries to work her way into Roger's heart by means of
food and housekeeping, but Roger is uninterested in her.
Roger learns of Claire's mysterious disappearance and figures out that Frank
probably wasn't Bree's Daddy.
Roger, Bree, and Claire go to the Kirk at St. Kilda's to see Jack Randall's
gravestone. However, to Claire's shock, she discovers a stone with the name James
Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser, beloved wife of Claire. This is the
prompt for her confession to Bree about Bree's true identity.
Claire tells Brianna and Roger the story of her disappearance through the stones
of Craigh Na Dun up to their activities in France and Scotland in 1744
and 1745 . She continues
her explanation of her time in the past up through the battle of Culloden in 1746
.
Brianna has a hard time hearing about all this. She has always thought of Frank
Randall as her real father and the unexpected knowledge that he is not throws
her. Roger is somewhat calmer and Claire asks him if he believes her. He is
somewhat skeptical. Roger asks her if her silver ring has a maker's mark. At
this point, Claire discovers that there is an inscription inside her silver
wedding ring (the one Jamie gave her). She had never known it was there, as she
had never taken it off. Claire becomes emotional as she reads the poem Hugh
Munro had given her as a wedding present along with the dragonfly in amber.
Roger then believes her story.
Claire also tells Roger of his true ancestry as a descendent of Geillis Duncan.
They also decide to look for Gillian Edgars (Geillis Duncan) before her
return to the past.
They get information on Gillian from Fiona, Gillian's husband, and the local
historical society at which she studies.
May 1 (Beltane)
Claire, Bree, and Roger are all at Craigh Na Dun where Gillian has killed her
husband and is preparing to travel. Claire calls her name as she leaps through
the stones.
Bree now believes her mother's tale, having witnessed what she did on the hill.
Later at Roger's house, one more piece of information is revealed. Roger reports
that not only did all the Lallybroch men apparently start safely on the road
home from the battle, but Jamie, too, lived.
While researching, Roger, Bree, and Claire discover that Jamie escaped the
slaughter immediately following Culloden. Claire asks Roger to find out what
happened to him if he didn't die in the battle.
May 9
Claire tells Roger about Frank's initial reaction to her return and her explanation. She also explains why she avoided anything having to do with Jacobite history because of the painful memories associated with it for her.
Brianna finds a legend known as the Leap o' the Cask. When she
reads about the Dunbonnet, she is sure that this is Jamie because he would have
had to have hidden his hair (with a brown hat perhaps).
August
Brianna and Roger visit Loch Ness. They visit Drumnadrochit and come even
closer to finding Jamie when they come across his official pardon.
September
Claire flies back to Boston. She reminisces about Joe Abernathy and her early medical career. She finds herself analyzing her dependance on modern contrivances. She receives a telegram at home saying that Jamie has been found.
At the hospital in Boston, Claire helps Joe Abernathy analyze the bones
that (presumably) belong to Geillie Duncan. (They were retrieved from the cave
she dies in.) When she asks Joe if she is still attractive, he asks her if she
wants to know because of something to do with Bree's father. She gets Joe to
help her with Bree, and then she resigns from the hospital.
October 5
Roger tells Claire that he found the deed of sasine. They also have found a printed article by Alexander Malcolm dated 1765. They are sure it was printed by Jamie because it uses a quote by Burns (who was 6 years old at the time). Brianna tells Claire she can go back and find him.
Claire begins to prepare for her trip back. She acquires a suitable dress
and money for her use.
November 1
Claire returns to the hill of Craigh Na Dun. She finds Roger and Brianna there. Bree is dressed to go back in case Claire does not. Claire says her goodbyes and steps through the stones to 1766.
