Early 1761

Jamie has enjoyed the early year's of Willie's life while he remained a groom at Helwater. He is able to spend time with his young son as the boy loves to ride his pony. During this time, John Grey has made several visits to Helwater - each time, stopping to visit Jamie at the stables.

As Willie grows, people are beginning to notice a resemblance between Jamie and the boy. When this happens, Jamie realizes it is time to speak to Lady Dunsany about his leaving.

September

John Grey arranges Jamie's pardon and he prepares to leave. He tells Willie of his departure the day before he goes and the young boy becomes upset. He has become attached to his groom and he asks Jamie to make him a "stinking Papist" so he can be like Jamie. Jamie agrees to baptize him as William James, but insists that it be kept a secret.
