Lord Dunsany and Lady Isobel have Jamie and one of the other grooms take hime to Ellesmere. His daughter is due to be delivered. Jamie has counted backwards and is fairly certain that it is his child. When they arrive they learn that the baby is alive but Geneva has died. They also learn that Ellesmere apparently never "did it" with Geneva. When Ellesmere threatens the baby's life, Jamie grabs a pistol and shoots him. He then rescues his son from the man's arms. The coroner's court determines that Ellesmere met his death by misadventure. Lady Isobel offers Jamie his freedom but jamie decides to stay for awhile because of the child.
