Winter Spring

Winter

One day as Fergus is bringing a cask of ale to Jamie in his hiding place, the boy comes upon a group of English soldiers. Jamie can see him from his hiding place. Fergus taunts the soldiers instead of giving up the ale. It soon escalates and then ends with a blade through Fergus' wrist and his small hand lying in the track near the cave. Jamie can do nothing to help otherwise it would make Fergus' sacrifice worthless.

Jamie waits two days to come to the house to see the boy. At Fergus' bedside, Jamie tells Fergus how bad he feels about what has happened and Fergus replies by reminding him that he is now a "gentleman of leisure" according to the bargain which Jamie made to take him into his service.

Following this incident, Jamie has decided that it would be best if he let himself be taken by the English. Jenny is fearful that Jamie will be hanged, but Jamie tells her that he will not be. He knows because of Claire's knowledge and he reminds Jenny of how Claire had the "Sight." He wants her to arrange for someone to turn him in so that his family can profit from the reward money.

Spring

Two months after presenting his plan to Jenny, the arrangements have been made for Jamie to be captured. Mary MacNab comes to bring him a meal the night before, and she also offers him her body. Reluctantly, he decides to have relations with her.
