January Winter April
Jamie and Claire arrive in Edinburgh and discover that Charles Stuart is at
Stirling Castle. Jamie is furious because his men remain locked in the Tolbooth
prison.
Simon Fraser offers to help Jamie get his men out of the prison. It is also
discovered that Dougal MacKenzie has arrived with ten thousand pounds stirling
to present to Charles Stuart (the money Geillis diverted in Cranesmuir).
Claire remains in Edinburgh while Jamie, Simon, and Dougal go to Stirling to see
about the release of the Lallybroch men. Claire spends her time and money caring
for the prisoners as best she could. While trying to pawn the gold and pearl
necklace, Claire runs into Mary Hawkins. She has been secretly seeing Alex
Randall. Claire once again attends to Alex's medical needs, and she once again
receives priviledged information from Jack Randall as payment.
Falkirk
Claire personally leads her men to Stirling to rendezvous with Charles, Dougal,
and Jamie. After they are all together, they discover that the English are aware
of their position and they will have to fight. Jamie tells Claire to take
sanctuary in a small kirk while they are fighting. Several of Dougal's men, in
addition to Jamie, also end up taking shelter in the kirk, hidden from the
English.
They pass the night there as Claire tends the fatal wounds of Rupert. As there
is nothing Claire can do for him, Dougal ends his suffering with his dirk.
In the morning, when the English surround the kirk and threaten to burn them
out, Jamie devises a plan. They "trade" Claire to the soldiers, making
them think that they're rescuing an English lady. Jamie promises to come and get
her from the English as soon as possible.
After being taken by the English, Claire discovers that the battle she thought
had taken place was not the main battle of Falkirk. Also, Jamie is not able to
come for her before she is sent to the south (due to her association with Red
Jamie Fraser - although they think she was a captive and not his wife).
Claire finds herself taken to the house of Mary Hawkins and her godfather. She
quickly instructs Mary to pretend not to know her, fearing for her own safety as
well as Jamie's.
Mary's godfather turns out to be the Duke of Sandringham. He confronts Claire.
During this confrontation, Claire discovers that Sandringham's valet is the man
that had attacked them in Paris. She also sees Hugh Munro appear near the
window.
Sandringham locks Claire in a room and Mary voluntarily joins her. At night,
Jamie comes to rescue Claire. Mary insists that he take her with him. With no
time to argue, they make their escape together. In the process, a servant is
killed by Jamie...the one who had attacked Claire in Paris!
They ride north and bring Hugh Munro's body home to his widow. Jamie tells her
that he has vengeance for Hugh's death, and he pulls the head of the Duke of
Sandringham out of a bag.
Slowly, they continue north to Edinburgh, hiding their identity. In Edinburgh,
Alex and Mary are reunited. Claire gets her pearls back from the pawnbroker, and
before they leave for Inverness, Jamie and Claire are summoned to Alex's room.
There, Alex has them witness the marriage of his brother and Mary, so that his
child will have a name after he dies (of congestive heart failure). Following
the wedding, Alex dies.
Jamie and Claire travel north from Edinburgh, following the retreat of the
Highland army. The other Highlanders they saw were weak and starving as they
headed toward Drumossie Moor, where Bonnie Prince Charlie had decided that they
would make their stand.
April 15
They reach Culloden house in the middle of the morning. They find old Alec in
the stable, empty due to the fact that the horses have already been eaten. Only
Donas had been spared, saved for Prince Charlie to ride in victory.
In desperation, Jamie and Claire go so far as to contemplate killing Prince
Charlie. Dougal overhears them and a fight ensues. Jamie is forced to kill his
uncle in defense of his wife. Willie Coulter MacKenzie witnesses the death.
Jamie asks him for one hour before he tells anyone.
Jamie then asks Murtagh and Claire to sign a Deed of Sasine, leaving Lallybroch
to young Jamie as of July 1, 1745. He then sends Fergus (on Donas) to take the
signed deed to Lallybroch as fast as possible. Finally, Jamie takes Claire to
Craigh Na Dun.
At first, Claire is horrified by the prospect of returning to her time and
leaving Jamie. She tells him she wants to dress as a man, fight in the battle,
and die with him. He knows she is pregnant and refuses to allow her to remain.
Jamie's plan is to return to the battlefield and see his men safe on the road to
Lallybroch. He then plans to fight to the death on Drumossie Moor.
April 16
Claire and Jamie make love several times. Before they are to be separated,
Claire asks Jamie to mark her. He cuts a "J" into her hand. She then
cuts her initial into his hand.
As English soldiers approach the abandoned cottage they had spent the night in,
Claire and Jamie make love one last time. He then sends her to the stones and
she leaps through to 1948
.
Jamie goes back to fight in the battle of Culloden. After the battle, he
finds himself lying on the field thinking he must be dead, but realizing that he
is not. He prays that Claire and the baby have found safety. Black Jack
Randall's body is lying across his own, fulfilling Claire's prophesy that he
would die that day.
Late April
Jamie ends up in a house near the field with other Jacobite officers. He is badly wounded. The English soldiers come to execute the "traitors" and before doing so, take a roster. When Jamie's name is taken down, the British officer in charge decrees that he cannot execute Jamie because he owes a debt on behalf of his brother, John William Grey. Jamie is then loaded into a wagon and sent home to Broch Turach. The officers assumes that Jamie's injuries will cause him to perish on the way.
