Early May-

Claire Randall meets Black Jack Randall after passing through the standing stones of Craigh Na Dun "...and a bloody, nasty, filthy pervert he was!"

Claire is rescued from Randall by Murtagh, who takes her back to where Dougal MacKenzie and the others are waiting in a stone cottage. It is here that she meets Jamie who has been shot by a musket ball and whose shoulder has been dislocated. Claire sets his shoulder, dresses his wounds, and they are all off on horseback in the night.

May

Claire, Jamie, Dougal, and company arrive at Castle Leoch. Colum MacKenzie questions Claire's origins and her story that she is an English widow.

Mistress Fitzgibbons introduces Claire to Davie Beaton's surgery where Claire begins to treat the sick and injured of Castle Leoch.

Jamie works in the stables at Leoch with old Alec. Jamie also accepts punishment for Laoghaire (which consists of a beating). Laoghaire is attracted to Jamie although he pays her little mind.

Mid/Late May

The Gathering at Castle Leoch - The men of Clan MacKenzie come to swear oath to Colum.

Claire meets Geillis Duncan.

Claire tries to escape to Craigh Na Dun, but runs into Jamie at the stables. Jamie escorts her back to the castle, but then is forced to go to the oath-taking ceremony. Jamie does not take the oath, but pledges allegiance to the clan.

Then, Jamie and Claire leave with Dougal to travel through the MacKenzie lands.

June

Claire meets Jack Randall again when Dougal takes her to Brockton.

Claire and Jamie are married in the small kirk where Claire and Frank marry in the twentieth century. The marriage has been arranged by Dougal so Claire will not have to be turned over to Randall on June 18.

Summer

Following their wedding, Jamie and Claire continue to travel with Dougal (and the whole entourage). They have their first encounter with Hugh Munro, who offers to assist Jamie in finding Horrocks. (Horrocks may be able to help prove Jamie should not be an outlaw.)

After they are raided on the road, Claire is taught how to defend herself with a dirk and given a sgian dhu to carry.

When Jamie goes to meet Horrocks, he leaves Claire in a safe space and orders her to stay put. She decides that this is a good time to try to get to Craigh Na Dun, but on her way to the hill, she ends up at Fort William. Randall attempts to rape her, but Jamie rescues her just in time. Later, Jamie beats her (on the arse) for not staying put (and risking their lives as well). He then vows never to strike her again.

Dougal, Claire and Jamie then head back to Leoch upon receiving a message from Colum that Duke of Sandringham is coming to the castle.

After returning to Leoch, Jamie gives Claire the silver, Highland interlace pattern wedding ring.

Late Summer

While living at the castle again, Claire spends time with Geillis who shares her knowledge of plants and herbs. Jamie spends time breaking the tempermental horse Donas (whom wee Hamish wishes to ride). Claire helps Jamie and Alec deliver Losgann's foal.

early autumn

Arthur Duncan dies by cyanide poisoning (courtesy of Geillis) at a castle during a dinner in honor of the Duke of Sandringham. Claire is later summoned to Geillis' house, under false pretenses (set up by Laoghaire). She is there when Geillis is taken as a witch and put in the Cranesmuir thieve's hole with Geillis for three days. While there, Claire discovers Geillis is pregnant.

Geillis and Claire are made to stand trial for witchcraft. Ned Gowan comes and argues on Claire's behalf, but it is Jamie (upon returning from a stag hunt) who finally saves Claire by pointing out the jet black crucifix does not burn her skin ( a sure test of witchcraft). Geillis then dramatically confesses, denounces Claire's involvment, and gives Jamie and Claire an opportunity to get away. As they leave, Claire gets a sight of Geillis' vaccination scar.

October 20 (Claire's 27th birthday)

After getting away from Cranesmuir, Jamie asks Claire for the truth: Is she a witch? She then explains how she got there, through the stones, and why she knows what she does.

October 21

Jamie takes Claire to Craigh Na Dun and tries to send her back through the stones to her own time. She warns him about Culloden and the Rising and he leaves her to the stones. After much thought, though, she finds that she cannot go back. She chooses to stay with Jamie.

Reunited with Jamie, they set off on the road to his home, Lallybroch.

November

Jamie takes Claire back to his family home, Broch Tuarach, which is also known as Lallybroch. On the way, Claire tells him tales of life in the 20th century.

Upon their arrival, Claire meets Ian, Jenny, and young Jamie. Jenny and Jamie immediately fight about their experience with Jack Randall. Jamie is under the false impression that Jack raped her and that young Jamie is Jack's child. Jenny explians to him that Jack was impotent and they clear up their misunderstanding.

Jamie and Claire settle in at Lallybroch. Jamie resumes his duties as laird and Claire tends the sick and injured in the area, visiting the cottages.

One day while Jamie is helping to fix the mill, a group of dragoons come to Lallybroch. Claire and Grannie MacNab cover while Jamie stays hidden in the mill pond.

On Quarter Day, Lallybroch's tenants come to pay rent and do business with their laird. It is also a festive occasion for them all.

A few days following Quarter Day, English are spotted twenty miles away. Claire and Jamie mean to leave the next day, but Jenny goes into labor and gives birth to her second child, a girl, Margaret Ellen.

Shortly after the birth, Jamie and Ian are away from Lallybroch and are ambushed by the Watch. Ian returns, injured, and Jenny and Claire set off after Jamie and the Watch. When they meet up with Murtagh, Jenny returns home to her baby and Claire and Murtagh continue on. However, before leaving, Jenny (upon Jamie's request) asks Claire if there's anything she must tell her. Claire tells her to add a priest-hole to the house and to plant potatoes against the coming famine.

December

Murtagh and Claire continue to search for Jamie who has escaped from the Watch. With help from the Gypsies they search, drawing attention to themselves as Claires treats people and tells fortunes and Murtagh sings in taverns.

They discover that Jamie is being held in Wentworth Prison, one of the Border fortresses. Claire learns this in a meeting in a cave with Dougal, where she also confronts him about his activities as a smuggler and adulterer (Hamish, Geillis' child). Dougal tries to convince Claire to abandon Jamie to his fate and come to Beannachd (his home).

Claire, Murtagh, and five of Dougal's men head to Wentworth where Jamie is awaiting hanging on December 23.

December 22

With Murtagh's help, she locates Jamie, who is chained and whose right hand has been horribly broken. Claire is unable to free him from the irons, and she is there just as Jack Randall arrives.

Jack nails Jamie's injured hand to a table, and then releases Claire through a back door of the prison. At this point, Claire curses him with the hour of his death - April 16, 1746.

Claire finds herself outside the prison and is attacked by wolves. She is saved by a man named MacRannoch. She asks him to help save Jamie, but he refuses until he discovers that Jamie is the son of Ellen MacKenzie whom he once loved.

With MacRannoch's help, Claire, Rupert, and the others rescue Jamie (while filling Wentworth with cattle through the back door). Jamie is severely injured and back at MacRannoch's house, Claire tends his wounds, including setting the smashed bones of his right hand.

They are told that Jack Randall is dead, "a rag-doll rolled in blood."

December 23

The following day they escape the area surrounding Wentworth. In the process, Claire must make her second kill in as many days. After several treacherous hours, they reach a ship, the Cristabel, that is to sail to France. Jamie nearly dies of seasickness on the way to the French Coast.

December 24 - end of the year

They arrive at the Abbey where Jamie's uncle lives. They continue to tend to Jamie's injuries. Claire finds peace for herself in spending an hour with the perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Jamie's condition worsens and he is given Last Rites. Claire is finally able to save him through her own body.
