OUTLANDISH NEWS...December,2000

Outlander, the Mini Series???

Diana Gabaldon posted at her main website* that Outlander is under development as a 4 hour miniseries by ABC to be programmed for next year.
DG is in no way involved in any script or character approval, so please don't "bug" her about any of those details. ;)

* Thanks to Judy for the heads up ;)

But... it is useful to TELL ABC that you want to see this project move FORWARD!

I suggest for  Phase One that EVERYONE send a Supportive Note about the project to this link:
http://abc.go.com/abc/help/contact.html
Select the Movies and Specials category and send a simple, positive note.

If we NEED a Phase TWO...I say we think of something attention-getting involving snail mail to:
ABC, Inc.
2040 Avenue of the Stars
Century City, CA 90067
bulletWe can take an idea from  the Crashdown.com website which organized fans to send in bottles of tabasco sauce to programming folk at the WB and some tv critics. This crusade was crucial in getting Roswell renewed for the Fall 2000 TV schedule. The fact that Fans actually SENT them something counted to the Programming people since they equated every bottle of tabasco with thousands of fans. ;)
bulletSo, I'm thinking we can  organize a send-in of strips of plaid ribbon or stones or hmmm...how about old broken watches??? ANY IDEAS???

bulletNow...Just adding my .02
I don't believe that ANY movie or tv show can do justice to the books that Diana has written. But, that doesn't mean I can't enjoy watching and discussing what may appear on the screen. Heck...I watch Regis so I think I can handle a show "based" on my favorite books in the world! That said, no matter who ABC casting picks, it really won't alter how I SEE my favorite characters! I remember I was one of those folks who thought the casting of Tom Cruise was an "abomination" to Interview with a Vampire. Guess what...I thought he was FABULOUS in the movie and couldn't imagine anyone else playing Lestat on the screen. But when I READ Anne Rice vampire novels, I still don't equate TC with Lestat in my mind. So I don't plan on getting TOO NUTTY about what selections are made since they don't affect my READING...LOL!

My feeling is, if the movie is created and promoted...all it does is justify our years of devotion to these novels and open them up...so even MORE folks will discover the books and share the obsession. :)

Nothing wrong with that!

We Have A NEW CHAT ROOM!!!

Our chats have had some real ups and downs. I can blame some of it on a prolonged virus this fall, but I have NO MORE excuses for the way the AIM rooms were working...or NOT!  Recently AOL updated to version 6.0 and since then, accessing the AIM rooms has been totally erratic, no matter how you updated. The Proverbial STRAW was last week when I could use AIM but couldn't access ANY of my AIM chat rooms--even though I updated my computers. That was That...AIM chat rooms are HISTORY Now! It was also tiresome to have to spend half of our chat time trying to get folks into the room! :(

I knew I had to quickly find a decent chat room that didn't involve downloading. Since I have "groups" set up at both Excite and E-Groups... I took a look at both of them. Both are highly recommended areas that simply involve registering and then subscribing or joining the groups involved in order to gain access to the chat rooms. I decided to go with the E-Groups since they seem a little more stable than the Excite group area. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Excite.com and use it as my default with my @home service. But about 10% of the time, my "group pages" are not accessible. I simply didn't want to take the chance that this was server related during heavy traffic times. So I opted for the E-groups Chat rooms as the best option for now.

I am keeping my eyes open and as I become more technically proficient I hope to eventually develop rooms you won't have to register for that have no access problems.

If you currently have an e-group or onelist registration, simply log into our chat room or egroup link and subscribe to the Outlandish Central group. Only folks who are subscribed to this listing will get weekly chat reminders.  My e-group persona is Reading Groups. General mail to the entire group will continue to come from my aol persona, TheOutlandish1@aol.com

Any problems with the room, either email me or see if I am online during chat times via my AIM instant messenger, Bookoworm. :)

Some Exciting News about our Message Board!

Our Outlandish Central Message Board is a part of the Forum called "Bookaholics of the Book Clique Cafe", that I developed earlier this year to support a number of reading groups. It is located at www.ezboard.com and Bookaholics has been HONORED by its selection as a Featured Board on the Internet at the NEW BOOK SITE which ezboard just launched... www.talkaboutbooks.com

This is VERY exciting and means some great promotion for our group on the Internet! PLEASE participate in these boards, they have some GREAT new features. Recently we added Polling and I've been trying to generate some questions. If you have any... just contact me at theoutlandish!@aol.com and I'll post them!
You are always welcome to start discussions and anyone can post whether you are registered or not!

Enjoy!!!

Support Literacy on the Web as you do your Holiday Shopping!

The Book Clique Cafe @readinggroupsonline.com.

If you would like to help Support this Entire Site and directly, all the groups that will be a part of it, please check out our ... Survival Mall!!!

If you Intend to use any of our vendors, this doesn't cost YOU anything! You can still take advantage of any discounts or free shipping as you click into the vendor from the Mall link.

Sure, anyone can put up a free webpage, but the reality is that there ARE costs involved when you are trying to service a community with decent chat rooms, access to a decent server, and maintaining software. We are trying to create a relatively turnkey and enjoyable literary community and YOU can HELP us simply by remembering to use OUR MALL LINKS when you feel the urge to buy a book from Amazon, Electronics and More from Buy.com, Candles from Illuminations, A computer from Gateway, Perennials from our Gardening Sites, Pet supplies...you get the idea! We know that  Christmas is coming and we will be posting a Linked page from the MALL with any additional specials that are monthly or seasonal.

We don't intend to hit you over the head and constantly whine about needing help... We simply  ask  you that if you already intended to buy things online or play some games, BookMARK our Mall page and start there first. :)
